Title: Recognition of Significant Gifts and Donations

Status: Active

Adopted: February 25, 2020

Recognition of Significant Gifts and Donations

The Ferndale School Board encourages gifts and donations to the Ferndale School District. Gifts may come from individuals, non-profit organizations, and/or corporations.

The School Board recognizes its schools and facilities play an important role in promoting and celebrating community and neighborhood identity. As such, the Board will consider, whenever practical and appropriate, naming or otherwise attributing facilities or portions of facilities in a manner that acknowledges significant gifts or donations.

The School Board realizes that plaques, nameplates, donor walls, and similar forms of recognitions (i.e., displays on walls, floors, grounds, or the like) can provide appropriate acknowledgement and encourage future donations, if implemented, installed, and/or advertised in accordance with this policy.

Therefore, the School Board allows that, when deemed appropriate, for a length of time approved by the School Board, a facility or smaller portion thereof may be named after a corporate, family, or organizational sponsorship, provided the mission of the sponsoring entity aligns with the goals of the District and represents an image acceptable in an educational setting.

The School Board specifies that:

•Plaques, nameplates, donor walls, and similar recognitions should be used as acknowledgement of gifts of a significant amount, to be determined by the Superintendent or his/her designee.

•The placement of plaques, nameplates, donor walls, and similar recognitions within a school should be determined in consultation with the school’s Principal and/or leadership team and approved by the Superintendent or his/her designee.

•Plaques, donor walls, name plates, and similar recognitions should be of an appropriate size to reflect the donation and/or donated object and its setting, as determined by the Superintendent or his/her designee.

•Corporate names may be allowed provided that they do not contain corporate logos, slogans, or advertising, or that they do not otherwise violate Board policy.

•Acknowledgement on plaques, name plates, donor walls, or similar recognitions that promote alcohol, marijuana, tobacco, or firearms in any way will not be permitted. The Board may choose to extend this aspect of the policy to deny sponsorships to any corporation or business entity whose primary association or focus of sales is alcohol, tobacco, marijuana, or firearms.

•This policy shall also apply to plaques or other forms of recognition placed in schools in acknowledgement of other external funding, such as memorials and/or donations.

•All donations and recognition of donations become the property of the District.

•The District may remove or alter a physical donation and/or its recognition in the future if deemed necessary. Examples of reasons a donation may be removed or altered include, but are not limited to: (1) safety concerns, (2) age and condition, (3) ethical breaches by the represented entity, and/or (4) facilities renovation.

The Ferndale School Board retains approval rights for all decisions related to (1) naming a building or a portion of a building, and/or (2) installing a permanent plaque, nameplate, donor wall, or similar form recognition.
