Procedure - Cultural Awareness Weeks
I. Background
Cultural Awareness Weeks are planned for the second and third weeks in March each year. Understanding the diversity and importance of all cultural backgrounds is the main purpose of cultural awareness activities.
II. Multiethnic Resources
A. Each building should select a committee and contact person to determine what cultural groups to highlight what activities would be appropriate for the school. Schools may participate through a variety of options including: conduct a special assembly, hold a multiethnic potluck, provide library displays, etc.
B. Resource materials which can be selected through school libraries include topics such as:
- Selected Multiethnic/multicultural events and personalities (Susan B. Anthony Day Activities; Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Activities)
- Holidays around the world (e.g. Chinese New Year, Syttende Mai - - a Norwegian Celebration)
- Masks and artifacts of various cultures
C. As a supplement to presently planned activities, the Indian Education Office will provide the following material:
- Cultural Consultants Resource List;
- Indian Education Materials List; and
- Indian Education Kits Information.
D. In addition, teachers who are sensitive to and knowledgeable of the Indian community may be selected from each building to serve as a resource person to assist with coordinating activities.
III. Evaluation
Descriptions of the building's activities, including any pictures, and an evaluation of the program will be sent to the Curriculum and Instruction Office.
