Title: Traffic Safety Education

Status: Active

Procedure - Traffic Safety Education

I. Classroom Instruction

The Traffic Safety Education Program is a three phase program: 1) classroom, 2) simulations, and 3) behind-the-wheel instruction. The thirty-six hours classroom, nine hour simulator and nine hour on-street instruction is offered three times during the course of the school year. A summer class is offered if there is sufficient interest.

II. General Information

A. Fees

The Factors effecting the fee amount are reviewed yearly by the director of business and operations and by the school board. The Traffic Safety Education Program is funded by a combination of student fees and reimbursement from the state of Washington. The student fee must be paid during the sign-up period prior to attending the first class session. If paying at this time is not possible, a parent/guardian should contact the traffic safety education instructor to establish a mutually agreeable date by which time the fee will be paid. Students who qualify for the free and reduced meal program may pay a reduced fee. Forms may be picked up in the school's main office. This form is to be filled out and returned when the student's fee is paid.

B. Refunds

Students may receive a complete refund of the course fee if they withdraw from the program during the first three (3) days of class. The fee is not refundable after that time. In case of course failure, a student must pay the entire fee again in order to re-enroll into the next available Traffic Safety Education Program session.

C. Application Form

Students and parents/guardians must complete a formal application to be enrolled in the Ferndale School District Traffic Safety Education Program. This form will be handed out during the first class meeting. Once completed and returned, it is entered into the student's permanent file.

D. Enrollment

  1. Sign-up: Announcements are printed in the daily bulletin two to three weeks prior to the beginning of each morning and afternoon school class. This is done via the Principal's Bulletin in August for the fall class, in November for the winter class and in February for the spring class. Summer sign-up will be held during the first week in April.
  2. Age Requirements: The student should be fifteen and one-half (15 1/2) years of age by the first day of class. If enrollment allows, students who reach the minimum age of fifteen by the first day of class may be admitted.
  3. Priority for Acceptance: Age is the primary enrollment determiner. Preference is given to the oldest students living in the Ferndale School District. If the age determiner is equal, then a senior, junior, sophomore, and freshman sequence will prevail.
