Train Derailment Near Custer Elementary School

A little before noon today (December 22), a train derailed near Custer Elementary School resulting in a fire. The Fire Department and Whatcom Emergency Management responded to the incident and also notified the school district. The two district employees who were working in the building were safely evacuated, along with inhabitants of several nearby buildings. Custer School Road and part of Portal Way have been closed. First responders have set up their incident command in Custer’s parking lot.

All of our employees are safe and our facility is being well protected. We do not have any more details to share at this time.
