The Ferndale School Board has selected Dykeman Architects to design the new Ferndale High School. Based in Everett, Washington, Dykeman is a well-known and long respected architectural firm with a strong emphasis on quality K-12 school projects in Western Washington. Past projects include Lake Stevens High School, Sehome High School, North Creek High School, Whatcom Middle School and many other schools.
“We are thrilled,” said Ferndale School District Superintendent Dr. Linda Quinn. “This is the largest project our community has ever built, and we took that very seriously as we considered partners to design the new Ferndale High School. This building will reflect the needs and desires of our students, staff and community. It will be a school in which the entire community takes pride AND a school that reflects the conservative values of the Ferndale community; one that is sturdy and economical, not frivolous and fancy. It will be a “high tech” school that supports modern tools and technologies AND a “high touch” school that meets the needs of the whole person through personal and social services and a variety of options for building relationships. It will be a school that honors the richness of our traditions and past successes; one that celebrates our roots AND a school that is forward-focused and ready for future educational programs about which we cannot even be certain; one that celebrates our wings. Dykeman will help bring that kind of building to Ferndale.”
“This was a thorough process that started with an April 5th walk-through at the existing Ferndale High School,” said Ferndale School Board President Dr. Kevin Erickson. “We received five proposals from Architecture firms who attended that tour. From that group three were selected for interview.”
Interview committee representatives included Ferndale School District staff Superintendent Dr. Linda Quinn, Assistant Superintendent for Business and Support Services Mark Deebach, Assistant Superintendent for Teaching and Learning Scott Brittain, Ferndale High School Principal Jeremy Vincent, Executive Director for Student Services Dr. Paul Douglas, CTE Director Edwin Elefson and Maintenance Director Jamie Plenkovich. Kirk Pawlowski from Construction Services Group (CSG) and Ferndale School Board Members Andrew McLaurin and Kevin Erickson also participated. Oversight Committee members were invited but were unable to attend. They were briefed both before and after the interviews.

Ferndale Community Bond Oversight Committee Co-Chair Riley Cornelsen talks about the Oversight Committee’s involvement, “We met with Ferndale School District staff prior to interviews and reviewed all proposals. Our Committee is pleased with the way that this selection took place and looks forward to the next phase.”
Ferndale voters overwhelmingly supported a Ferndale School Bond in February with 62.04% of voters saying “yes.” That Bond includes $112 Million for a new Ferndale High School, renovation of the Performing Arts Center, Critical Maintenance Projects and Safety and Security projects throughout the District. The Ferndale School Board welcomed inclusion of the Citizen Bond Oversight Committee as part of the Bond proposal.
