Ferndale Voters overwhelmingly supported a Ferndale School Bond in February with 62.04% of voters saying “yes.” That Bond included $112 Million for a new Ferndale High School, renovation of the Performing Arts Center, Critical Maintenance Projects and Safety and Security projects throughout the District. The Ferndale School Board welcomed inclusion of the Citizen Bond Oversight Committee as part of the Bond proposal. That Committee will serve as in an advisory capacity to the Ferndale School Board to ensure that projects are “on-time, on-budget and as-promised.”

At a regular meeting of the Ferndale School Board on Tuesday, March 26th, the Board adopted a policy that officially brought the Bond Oversight Committee to life.

The policy, labeled GC-5, does the following:

  • Authorizes the Oversight Committee
  • States the Committee Purpose and Authority
  • Sets Committee Operating Guidelines
  • Defines Conflicts of Interest
  • Outlines various District supports
  • Sets Duration of the Committee
  • Schedules Opportunity to Review at future date

Mayor Jon Mutchler and Ferndale City Administrator Jori Burnett will attend the Oversight Committee meeting on April 18th to present their concept and current thinking about the City’s intentions regarding use of the building on the current Ferndale High School Campus known as “Old Main.”

Bond Oversight Committee Co-Chair Anya Milton says, “This is a good first test of our role and function as an Oversight Committee. The City proposal has drawn strong opinion from the Community and our job will be to look at the proposal as a whole and to help determine if there is sufficient value to the school district to let the city continue to explore this concept.”
