Magnetic Toy Balls, Magnetic Jewelry and Magnetic Items Letter Statement (Updated)

Magnetic Toy Balls, Magnetic Jewelry and Magnetic Items Letter Statement (Updated)

(12/5/18) Update and Addendum to Original Letter:

Upon further investigation, the magnetic items accidentally ingested by one of our students last week were magnetic toy balls, rather than magnetic body jewelry. We are thankful to report the child who accidentally ingested the magnetic balls is now doing well following the health emergency.

Because of the danger magnetic items pose, please note that magnetic ball toys (often branded as Buckyballs), magnetic jewelry, and all forms of small magnetic items with the potential to be swallowed are not allowed at any Ferndale School District buildings during school hours.

Note: The original letter below has been updated to correct the item accidentally ingested, as well as to clarify the district's rules regarding magnetic items. The text has been updated to include magnetic toy balls and all forms of small magnetic items, in addition to magnetic jewelry.

Dear Ferndale School District Families –

I am writing to let you know that one of our students experienced a health emergency over the weekend related to the accidental ingestion of magnetic toy balls.

Because of the danger magnetic items pose, magnetic ball toys (often branded as Buckyballs), magnetic jewelry, and all forms of small magnetic items with the potential to be swallowed are not allowed at any Ferndale School District buildings during school hours. Please take time to discuss this with your student.

Magnets can do serious internal damage and I want to urge our families to be very careful if your student is purchasing magnetic toy balls, magnetic jewelry or other magnetic items with the potential to be swallowed.

For a reference, please see a BBC story detailing the potential risks of magnetic jewelry for young people: https://www.bbc.com/news/health-20679904

As always, if you have questions, please reach out.

Best,
Dr. Linda Quinn

Superintendent, Ferndale School District
