Beach Elementary School Fourth Grader Mason Cash has been honored with the Sue C. Boynton 2018 Poetry Contest Award.
A total of 224 Whatcom County residents participated in the 13th annual poetry contest. From those 224, Mason was one of 25 chosen for the award. Also, he was chosen as a winner of one of the "10 Walk Awards."
Mason presented his poem and received his Walk Award at a ceremony held May 17. Mason's poem will be published in a chapbook collection and displayed this next year on the Sue C. Boynton Poetry Walk in front of the Bellingham Library. In addition, Mason's work will be displayed for a year inside Whatcom Transportation Authority buses circulating throughout Whatcom County.
A cool hallucination
Seen but not solid
The contest is named for Sue Crocker Boynton, an early resident of Whatcom County, Washington, who helped organize Bellingham’s PTAs and St. Luke’s Hospital Assistance League. Boynton came to Bellingham as a bride in 1906, taught classes at the YWCA and, in 1917, climbed Mt. Baker. Although she did not consider herself more than an amateur poet, she poured her emotions and thoughts into verse and inspired others to write.
Congratulations, Mason! #FerndalePride
