FREE Event—Teen Heart Screen May 30

FREE Event—Teen Heart Screen May 30

Ferndale High School has partnered with PeaceHealth St. Joseph Medical Center to bring Teen Heart Screen to Ferndale on Wednesday, May 30. The youth heart screening is available to any child ages 14-24. Screenings will take place between 8:00 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Screenings will be held at the Ferndale High campus located at 5830 Golden Eagle Drive.

Even teens who seem perfectly healthy may have hidden heart problems. Although the percentage is small, kids with undetected heart defects are at risk of sudden cardiac arrest. For people under 36, it is often due to hidden heart defects or abnormalities. If a defect or abnormality can be identified early, it can be monitored throughout a person's lifetime.

A simple screening can detect heart conditions such as hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, the most common cause of sudden death in athletes. The painless, noninvasive screening includes:
 •A heart health questionnaire
 •Blood pressure check
•Height, weight and body mass index measurements
•An electrocardiogram (EKG)
•Chest-compression CPR and AED defibrillator training
•On-site physician review of test results
•Echocardiogram (if directed by physician)

Pre-register no later than May 29. Registration forms are available in the Ferndale High School Athletic Office, 5830 Golden Eagle Drive, Ferndale, or they may be accessed online at this link PeaceHealth Teen Heart Screen

For anyone interested in participating in the screening who lives outside the Ferndale School District, please contact Cindy Gunderson by phone at 360-788-6197 to place your name on the screening list.

This important screening is FREE, thanks to the generous support of PeaceHealth St. Joseph Cardiovascular Center, Boston Scientific, Whatcom County Fire District #7, Whatcom County Fire District #14, Whatcom  County Fire District #1 and local businesses in our community.
