Kiwanis Student of the Month April 2022: Kaelee Bungard
Kaelee Bungard is deeply involved in Ferndale High School life. The FHS senior is not only a two-sport athlete – she’s also a captain for both teams. On top of that, she’s a member of FHS’ Future Farmers of America club and organizes Golden Eagles pep assemblies for the high school’s Leadership program.
Kaelee has played for the Golden Eagles volleyball team for all four years of high school. This fall was a banner season for her: Kaelee was named to the All-Northwest Volleyball first team, alongside a couple of her teammates, and the FHS volleyball team placed third in state in November. That was the best finish for a Golden Eagles volleyball squad since 1986! Kaelee also earned the Leaders in Sportsmanship and Most Valuable Teammate award this year. Kaelee has also played guard/forward for the Golden Eagles girls’ basketball team for three years and was a captain this year.
Kaelee works hard outside the basketball and volleyball courts as well. She works at Locker Room Fitness in a multi-faceted role, helping members at the front desk, cleaning the facilities, and working in the kids’ room. She also has helped with Ferndale High School’s food drive for the past two years, including setting up a drive-by food drive during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Kaelee takes academics seriously, having earned a 3.835 grade point average during her four years at FHS. After graduating in June, she plans to attend Washington State University to earn a degree in education. Eventually, she hopes to teach either kindergarten or P.E. – the same subject her mom, Dawn Bungard, teaches at Vista Middle School. Kaelee said her mom was the most influential person in her life.
“No matter what I do, she always supports me,” she said. “She pushes me to do my best in everything I do and she never lets me settle for less.”
Kaelee said the most important issue facing the community is school funding. In particular, she stressed the importance of passing the Ferndale School District replacement levy, which voters approved in February.
