June 2022 Kiwanis Student of the Month: Elizabeth Stanavige
Ferndale High School senior Elizabeth Stanavige – June 2022’s Kiwanis Student of the Month – has a strong interest in the environment and nature. She has participated in the school’s plant sale, planted native seeds all over Ferndale, and hopes to study herbology after high school.
“I want to learn about the properties of plants,” she said.
Elizabeth said protecting our environment is the most important issue facing our community. One of her volunteer activities was picking up litter throughout the region.
“I will continue to encourage and inform others about the (environmental) situation and/or problems,” she said. “I will continue to do my part.”
When Elizabeth isn’t studying – she earned a B grade average in her classes, she said – she works at the Penny Pinchers antique store off the Guide Meridian. Elizabeth has numerous responsibilities at that job, including working the cash register, selling items online, keeping items clean in the store, lifting heavy objects, and answering any questions customers may have.
Elizabeth said one of her high school teachers has been the most influential person in her life so far. She said they helped her navigate her four years at FHS.
“They encouraged me to try things I either have no motivation for or am too scared to do,” she said.
