Kiwanis has recognized Emma Hindes as its Student of the Month for January. Emma is a senior at Ferndale High School where she maintains a 3.0 grade point average. She's an athlete and a leader in promoting a positive school climate and culture.

Emma moved to Ferndale from California when she was in the third grade. Now in her last year of high school, she is taking every opportunity to make a difference in Ferndale.

"This year, I made my Passion Project about having students write what they were thankful for about the school and then put it in a box. Each morning in November during announcements, I would read aloud one of the thankful notes," Emma said. Also, as part of the high school leadership, Emma helps plan positive assemblies that get students involved in school.

Emma played on the school's volleyball team as a freshman. She has been a member of the girls' basketball team for four years and is currently the varsity team's captain. She says she likes to keep things positive and always encourages other players to do their best.

Emma notes that the school bond is the most important issue facing Ferndale today. She was sad that the bond did not pass in November. She hopes community members are becoming more informed about what the bond will provide, especially why Ferndale High School needs to be rebuilt.

In the summer months, Emma is employed by Boxx Berry Farm.

Emma credits her parents and siblings for being the most influential in her life. "They've taught me how to treat other people."

Following graduation this spring, Emma will travel to Madrid, Spain where she will spend time visiting a former exchange student with whom she has become friends. Then she plans to attend college in either Washington, California or Hawaii to study criminology.

Congratulations, Emma! We are proud of your accomplishments and your service to others. #FerndalePride

Thank you to Ferndale Kiwanis for its support of our students.
