Raelyn Macmillan is Kiwanis Student of the Month for March

Ferndale High School senior Raelyn Macmillan is Ferndale Kiwanis Student of the Month (SOM) for March. Raelyn was honored for her academic performance, her participation in school and community activities, and her service to our community.

At Ferndale High School, Raelyn has been a member of the volleyball team and the cheerleading squad. She has also been active in the leadership program. She is proud of the “most improved” award she won during her career as a volleyball player because it reflects the hard work she devoted to developing her skills. Raelyn is also an excellent scholar, as evidenced by the 4.0 GPA she has maintained at FHS while also being enrolled in Running Start at Whatcom Community College.  

Regarding her thoughts on community, Raelyn says, “Even in though we are facing difficult times, the members of our Leadership class are still trying to bring people together. Another senior and I took charge in organizing a Holiday Clothing and Toy Drive. We tried to include everyone and suggested many different ways to participate. I am extremely proud of how the drive played out. We received a ton of donations that will be going straight back into the Ferndale community. I am so grateful that the Ferndale Giving Store let us help.”

Raelyn reflects, “It is hard to bring people together and stay connected with the ongoing pandemic.” To address this challenge, she decided to conduct a poll to find out what kinds of activities the community would be interested in so she could help build a plan that responded to those interests. Her goal is to ignite as much Ferndale Pride as possible despite current conditions and restrictions.

After graduation, Raelyn plans to finish her Associates degree at Whatcom Community College and then attend a four-year university. Her ultimate goal is to pursue a career that will allow her to help others in some capacity, perhaps social work or community outreach.  

Raelyn credits her mother for being the most influential person in her life. She shares that her mother had her at a young age. “Watching how successful she has turned out because of her hard work is inspiring. She makes me want to be better and realize my full potential. I want to work hard to make her proud and also so that I believe in myself fully.”
