Mason Waller is Kiwanis Student of the Month

Windward High School senior, Mason Waller, was recognized as Ferndale Kiwanis Student of the Month for November. Mason was honored for her academic performance, involvement in school activities and her community service.

For the past four years, Mason has been on the honor roll each trimester. Her current grade point average is 3.958. She’s been recognized as Windward’s Student of the Month in 2015 and 2017. In March 2016, she received an award from Windward High teacher, Melissa Engels, for embodying the school’s core values—learning, community, leadership and creativity. Mason is also enrolled in courses at Whatcom Community College through the Running Start Program.

Mason is involved in many activities: Mock Trial, Teen Court, Dream Design Create, Associated Student Body, Service-Learning, Windward Boosters. Mason is Windward’s representative on the Ferndale School Board where she attends meetings, participates in discussions and brings a student voice to the board.

Community Service is a big part of Mason’s life.  She participates in Windward’s Community Service Days. She created projects for kids through the Whatcom County Library System. She helped with Ferndale’s Star Park build. She’s been part of Teen Court for three years, beginning her fourth. She has worked her way from being a jury member to now being eligible to be a judge. “I have always enjoyed being able to help bring teenagers back to their community,” said Mason.

Mason cites her mom as the most influential person in her life. Even through some hard times, her mom was strong, kind and amazing. “She has taught me what it is to be a good person. She has shown me what hard work and determination can do, and she has always supported my decisions,” said Mason.

Following graduation from high school, Mason plans to attend a four-year college to pursue a degree in environmental science. “I want to pursue a career that allows me to help my community and make it a better place to live for everyone. I want to help build a strong community engagement with the Earth, to preserve the amazingness that our planet is full of,” added Mason.
