Kimberly Weden is Kiwanis Student of the Month

Recently at a special luncheon, Ferndale High School senior Kimberly Weden was recognized as Ferndale Kiwanis Student of the Month for February. Kimberly was recognized as a student who makes a difference in the high school community and the community at large.

Kimberly maintains a 3.78 grade point average and is a recipient of the National Society of High School Scholars (NSHSS) Award. This award recognizes academic excellence and honors the highest achieving high school students in the nation. As a recipient, Kimberly will be able to access a wealth of resources that include scholarships, internships and leadership opportunities through NSHSS.

Besides being a top scholar, Kimberly is active in a variety of sports. She has participated in cross country, tennis, track and field and basketball. She plays post on the girls basketball team and looks forward to spring when she'll be a member of the track team. Most likely she'll compete in the 200-meter dash, as well as the long jump and triple jump.

Most proud of her service to others, Kimberly is a member of PALS (Peer Assisted Learning Strategies) Program. PALS is a mentor group Ferndale High School students that visit elementary schools to teach younger students reading. High school students act as coaches to the younger students to motivate students to read and to help them understand the content of what they read.

In other service, Kimberly volunteers at the Ferndale Food Bank stocking shelves and handing out items to customers. In addition, for her church, Cornwall, Kimberly helps with youth programs.

Overall, Kimberly says, "I'm proud of establishing my independence in my junior and senior years. It's been a real growing period." She credits her parents and her club coach with supporting her and helping her overcome obstacles in her life. "After graduation, I plan to attend a university, probably Northwest University in Kirkland, to possibly major in business and minor in Spanish. I also hope to play college ball," added Kimberly.
