Ferndale Kiwanis has honored Kate Cleary as its Student of the Month for June. Kate graduated this spring from Ferndale High School with a 3.902 grade point average. She’s an AP Scholar and a five-year Spanish student. Throughout her four years at Ferndale High, Kate was involved in many activities from leadership to sports.
As a leader of the ASB, Kate served as treasurer. Also, she helped organize community service projects like this past year’s three successful Blood Drives. In addition, she is a past member of the Volleyball Team. This year, Kate was captain of the Varsity Tennis Team.
Besides her academic studies and school related activities, Kate found time to make a difference in her community. She regularly volunteered at the Ferndale Food Bank sorting food products and stocking shelves. Also, she helped serve community meals at the United Church in Ferndale and at Assumption Church in Bellingham.
Believing in hard work, Kate has been employed by Boxx Berry Farm for the past three years. She began in the U-pick fields and has worked her way to customer service in the farm’s storefront.
Kate plans to continue her education by attending the University of Portland in Oregon. “It’s in the top five in the nation of nursing schools. I received a four-year Presidential Scholarship that helps with tuition. I love science and hope to eventually complete a doctorate in nursing,” Kate said. “Someday, I hope my skills will allow me to help children in children’s hospitals, as well as in third world countries.”
Congratulations, Kate! We wish you all the best in reaching your goals!
Thank you to Ferndale Kiwanis for its continued support of our students. In addition to annual scholarships, each month Kiwanis recognizes one of our high school students.
