Greetings, fellow parents and community!
My name is Esther and I am writing on behalf of the Skyline Parent Teacher Organization (PTO). This year, we are especially excited to share that our PTO is collaborating with a non-profit called Common Threads to build a school garden at Skyline.
This is a yearlong curriculum where each classroom receives instruction bi-monthly on gardening in fall and spring, and monthly in-class cooking lessons in the winter! It is a seed to table approach that involves the children from planting to harvest, through to the preparation and consumption of their labors!
We plan to get everything ready between now and early spring so students can begin planting then. The first phase of the garden was installed on October 26, National Make a Difference Day. We had over 50 people participate, such an amazing group of people committed to the students and this project. The garden will also be ADA accessible, as we want the space to be inclusive.
We have received support from businesses who have readily provided free or reduced price materials for this project. On behalf of the whole Skyline Elementary community, we would like to thank Sound Cedar, Augusta Lawn Care, ACE Hardware, Tractor Supply, Builders First Source, Peterson Construction, S and W Gravel, Cloud Mountain and Birchwood Food Desert Fighters for supporting this project. Also, the Bear dens of local Cub Scout troop #4026 came together and built the raised beds!
The possibilities are endless and we are looking forward to what this new space will provide for teachers who wish to use an outdoor learning space for special lessons.
I hope that parents and community members will come by and see this great project and, in the spring, we look forward to sharing news of our first planting!
If you would like to join in supporting this project or future PTO projects at Skyline, we would love to have you at our next PTO meeting. We meet on the 2nd Thursday of every month at 6:30 PM in the Skyline Library. Childcare is provided and we trust it will be a meaningful time of connection!
