Ferndale School District teachers from nine school campuses were recently named mini-grant recipients by the Whatcom County School Retirees Association (WCSRA) after applying for grants to support a variety of educational experiences for students.

A total of 35 Ferndale School District recipients were awarded mini-grants from the WCSRA. Each year, the WCSRA offers mini-grant applications to teachers at Whatcom County schools. Teachers can request up to $200 for a special project or classroom item via a grant application to the WCSRA.

The 35 mini-grants awarded to Ferndale staff members were the most grants to any district for the 2018 grant awards, as 66 total mini-grants were distributed by the WCSRA in Whatcom County.

Funds from mini-grants awarded to Ferndale School District staff will go toward a range of requested projects, trips and classroom materials. The list includes: science projects, math projects, art projects, writing projects classroom library collections, field trips, guest speakers, flexible classroom seating arrangements, classroom technology and vocational experiences among other items and experiences.

Recipients were awarded grants during presentations at school campuses during December prior to Winter Break. WCSRA members Jerry Finkbonner (WCSRA Co-President) and Bev Smith (WCSRA Retirement Planning), both former Ferndale School District teachers, conducted the mini-grant presentations and presented grant checks to recipients.

"The local Whatcom County School Retirees Association chapter has distributed its 2018 mini-grant awards to 35 Ferndale School District recipients for an amazing $6,358.00 out of the total 66 mini-grants awarded in Whatcom County,” Finkbonner said. “We are grateful to be able to support education in Whatcom County through the mini-grant program and it was a great experience to visit school campuses to recognize and speak with our recipients.”

Ferndale High School, Vista Middle School, Horizon Middle School, Central Elementary, Cascadia Elementary, Custer Elementary, Eagleridge Elementary, Skyline Elementary and the North Bellingham Learning Center each were represented with mini-grant recipients.
