Updated January 12, 2018
Community Meeting set to explore options for 2018-2019
Thursday, January 25 • 6:30-8:30PM
Windward High School Gymnasium • 5275 Northwest Avenue, Bellingham
This meeting is for Windward High School students and parents, as well as other community members who are interested in educational options for high school students. Ferndale School District is committed to providing a variety of educational options for high school students. At this meeting, representatives will be on hand to present options that include: Running Start, Soar, Impact, Virtual High School and Ferndale High School.
Changes are coming to Ferndale Schools and we want to communicate directly with the community about what you can expect.
The 2017-2018 will be Windward High School's final year.
Windward has been an option for High School students for the past 14 years. During the past few years, however, fewer students have elected the Windward option. Last spring only seven freshmen enrolled.
- Windward staff are highly valued members of the Ferndale School District team, and their continued employment in the district is guaranteed.
- Windward staff will work with each current Windward student to help transition to their next best educational option.
We promise to do all we can to create the kind of graceful, respectful final chapter that will honor our current students and staff as well as all the Windward students and staff who have come before.
Windward High School Transition FAQ
Q: I heard that Windward is closing – is that true?
A: Yes. Windward, in its current form, will close at the end of the 2017-2018 school year.
Q: Why is Windward closing?
A: Students and families are no longer choosing Windward in large enough numbers to maintain the school in its current form. This year’s freshmen class of seven (only three of whom reside in the Ferndale School District) increases the recruitment challenge. Students coming up are less likely to choose an option when it was not chosen by students in the class ahead of them.
Q: What will happen to current students?
A: Seniors will graduate with Windward High School diplomas. All other students will work with Windward staff to help develop other learning community options for the next school year.
Q: What are the options for freshmen, sophomore, and junior students?
A: The District Administration has begun to develop a suite of new and existing options which can be offered in 2018-2019 if students show interest. Here are those options:
- OPTION 1: Evening High School (New Program)
- OPTION 2: Ferndale Virtual Learning Academy (New Program)
- OPTION 3: IMPACT! (Existing Program)
- OPTION 4: SOAR (Existing Program)
In addition to the four options – students will have the opportunity to become Ferndale High School students. If they have achieved Junior status, students may take advantage of the Running Start Program.
Q: What happens to current Windward staff?
A: Continued employment with the District is guaranteed. The School District will confer with each staff member to determine their preference for future assignment.
Q: Where can I get more information throughout the transition period?
A: There will be forums planned for Windward students, staff, and families throughout the transition process. In addition, the District will provide electronic resources and an online toolkit for transitioning students and staff.
