Ferndale High School senior Trevor Slaughter was Ferndale Kiwanis Student of the Month (SOM) for February. Trevor was honored for his academic performance, his participation in school and community activities, and his service to our community.

Trevor Slaughter is involved in wide range of activities. He participates in wrestling and tennis and serves as team captain for both sports. He is active in school leadership and serves as the Junior Class Treasurer and Publicity Director. He is enrolled in many honors and Advanced Placement classes, all while maintaining a 4.0 GPA. He had Kiwanis members shaking their heads at his incredible accomplishments and also his passion for making a difference in our community.

When asked to describe the things that he is especially proud of having accomplished, Trevor replied, “I am proud that I have been through almost 3 ½ years of high school and maintained a 4.0 GPA.” Trevor said he is also proud that he has been able to spend time playing sports and has been involved in the life of the school as much as possible. 

Trevor credits his dad for being the most influential person in his life. “My dad has worked very hard to get himself and everyone he loves where they are today,” said Trevor. “He is the most dedicated, hardest working person I know. He is also very family-oriented, which I plan to be as well when I am older. He has taught me nearly everything I know that I use to this day.”

In Trevor's spare time, he makes money by helping his family and neighbors with landscaping, painting, flooring and building projects. He also enjoys helping the community by volunteering for the Ferndale and Bellingham Food Banks. At school, he has assisted with planning and putting on a variety of high school events, including pep assemblies and homecoming. 

Trevor feels the most important issue our community is facing is the division of political ideas that leads to divisions among classmates, friend groups, and those we love within our community. He would prefer to spread positivity throughout the community.

Immediately after graduation, Trevor plans to spend the summer working. In the fall, he plans to attend college where he intends to study Chemical Engineering. His current plan is to work in the energy sector to improve the process of energy consumption. No matter what Trevor ends up doing, he plans to help the community in as many ways possible.
