Serina Headrick has spent her young life serving others in her community. Whether she is attending school, visiting with elders at a retirement home or working at Edaleen Dairy, she takes every opportunity to motivate and help others.

A senior and this year's Associated Student Body (ASB) President, Serina was recently recognized for her service to others, along with her academic performance and involvement in school activities, by Ferndale Kiwanis as its Student of the Month for January.

Serina has a 3.8 grade point average and has been a member of the Honor Society for four years. She has received many attendance and academic awards. She is involved in volleyball, track and field, DECA and works in the Eagle Cafe. This year, she is proud to be the school's ASB President. "My role as ASB President has taken me out of my comfort zone. It has given me the opportunity to reach out and help others," said Serina. "I'm working to motivate and unite Ferndale High students, improve student attendance and promote positive activities for students," she added.

Serina is also helping to inform our community about the conditions of school facilities, especially Ferndale High. Last fall, she and a group of students led a tour of the facility for the Bond Task Force. Task force members had the opportunity to see the conditions of the building and hear how they impact students and staff. "The logistics of getting to class are challenging. Having a school in one all-inclusive building would be ideal. Due to the low water table, the school's track has deteriorated and only one lane is useable by students for practice. We can't hold any meets at Ferndale High because of these conditions. We don't have the same facilities as other school districts. When we don't have the kinds of things we need, it makes us feel unprepared to do our best," said Serina.

Her service extends outside the walls of Ferndale High. She is employed by Edaleen Dairy where she takes pride in many roles: cashier, server, pantry stocker and provider of excellent customer service. Serina also helped build Ferndale's Star Park, promotes blood drives through Blood Works, visits the elderly, coaches kids at summer volleyball camp, and volunteers at the Ferndale Food Bank and with the nonprofit Chelsey Ebert Trust.

Following graduation from high school, Serina plans to attend a four-year college to pursue a degree in business which she believes will support a wide range of employment opportunities. She has applied to University of Washington and a few schools in Hawaii, Utah and Idaho.
