Future Farmers of America means a lot to Montana Lloyd. The Ferndale High School senior has been a FFA member for all four years of high school, and currently serves as the school club’s vice president. She’s won multiple awards from the organization, such as the Greenhand Award, and won the Northwest Washington FFA Landscape Competition in 2019. She’s also taken many courses related to farming, from horticulture to veterinary science to agriculture science. 

“I honestly am very proud of all my work I have done for the FFA,” Lloyd wrote. “I have always put my best foot forward when planning things like our end-of-the-year celebration banquet or our monthly meetings.” 

Naturally, Lloyd – who was named the Student of the Month for March 2022 by Ferndale Kiwanis – hopes to eventually become an agricultural education teacher and FFA advisor. She said she plans to attend Whatcom Community College next year, and eventually transfer to Washington State University, to achieve that goal. 

Lloyd said the most influential person in her life has been Tony Torretta, the FFA advisor for Ferndale High School. 

“He has been my biggest support through every single up and down of school,” she wrote. “He never underestimates me, and I appreciate how his positive outlook on any situation gives me a push to strive for the best I am able to do.” 

Outside of FFA, Lloyd spent three years in Ferndale High’s choir program, and was part of the sound crew for four of FHS’ theatre productions. Her other hobbies and interests include crocheting, reading and learning new languages. Lloyd is also an active volunteer with the Ferndale-based nonprofit Miracle Food Network. For about a year, she and other students in the FHS advanced agriculture class have worked with the organization to create food boxes for local low-income families. 

Helping those in need is the most important issue facing the Ferndale area, Lloyd said. “Especially in this cold and wet season, families in our community need to be shown love and comfort,” she said.
