FHS Winter Sports Preview

The Golden Eagles' winter sports season officially kicked off earlier this month with the first girls' bowling matches! Our other teams begin competitive play this week. In celebration of the season, we interviewed one standout upperclassman from each team (as selected by their coaches) to talk about their goals and why they love their sport.

Senior PG Bhavnoor Grewal

Q: What are you most looking forward to this year?

A: This new team. It’s a more experienced team this year, and I feel like we can really get things done.

Q: What’s your goal for this year?

A: I’m really team-centered, so I’m hoping we’ll just win games. We need to play as a team, play as a family. It was a tough season last year, but we’re trying to bounce back from that and show that we can contend.

Q: Why do you love basketball?

A: I’ve been playing it my whole life. The teammates, the people I’ve met throughout the years, it brings me closer to everybody and it feels like a family. Basketball is one spot I could escape to and I know I could rely on. When everything else goes wrong, I feel like basketball is always going right for me.

Q: What are you most looking forward to this year?

A: I’m most looking forward to bonding with the new team. I’m excited to work hard and get to know a bunch of new girls.

Q: What’s your goal for this year?

A: I think our biggest team goal is probably just to go as far as we possibly can. Losing a lot of core seniors last year, we have a lot to work on. One of my personal goals would be to work as hard as I can and try to get the team as far as we can during the season.

Q: Why do you love basketball?

A:  I love the team aspect of it. I love working with other girls in playing the game.

UNIFIED BASKETBALL

Last season: The Golden Eagles Unified Team (where students of all genders and abilities share the court) earned a 4-2 record.

Senior PG Ben Rankin

Q: What’s your goal for this year?

A: Make layups.

Q: Why do you love basketball?

A: My coach, Mr. Driver. He’s a good coach, he tells me to shoot 3’s. And my teammates, like Abdiel Ortiz.

Q: How do you feel when you hit a 3-pointer?

A: Fantastic.

GIRLS' BOWLING

Last season: The Golden Eagles sent one bowler, Haylee Ochoa, to state -- the ninth straight year that at least one member of the FHS girls' bowling team reached the state tournament.

Senior Katelin Oord

Q: What are you most looking forward to this year?

A: Getting to spend time with some of my closest friends and doing a sport that I love.

Q: What is your goal for this year?

A: Go to state. As a team, we've never gone to state -- it would probably be the high of my entire senior year if we made it.

Q: Why do you love bowling?

A: I grew up in bowling alleys and it is somewhere that has always felt like home. I love that bowling is a game but also a family: I love the girls on the team like they're sisters and our coach feels like a second father. Also, the sound of a ball heading the pins perfectly is highly therapeutic -- I highly recommend it if you need to get some stress out.

CHEER

Last season: At cheer camp in July, the Golden Eagles took home numerous awards, including the Herkie Award for best work ethic, the Stunt Safe Award for technique and safety, and Leadership awards for all five days of camp.

THE CHEER TEAM WILL BE AT EVERY BOYS' AND GIRLS' BASKETBALL GAME THIS SEASON.

Senior Elena Bianco

Q: What are you most looking forward to this year?

A: I am most looking forward to working with all the new girls on the team. I'm really excited to get to know them!

Q: What is your goal for this year?

A: This is my first year as captain, so I just want to lead the team in a really positive way and make everyone feel included.

Q: Why do you love cheerleading?

A: The friendships. I've made a lot of really good friends, and I love the positive environment in cheer.

BOYS' SWIM

Last season: The Golden Eagles fielded their first-ever full boys' swim team last year after many years of joining other schools' teams, sending six swimmers to the district tournament. The 400 free relay team (Boomer Dahlstrom, Odin Everson, Markus Little, and Cole Henken) also broke a long-standing FHS school record.

Q: What are you most looking forward to this year?

A: Last year, our first as a full team, we were just testing the waters. This year, hopefully we're going to lock in.

Q: What is your goal for this year?

A: My goal is to make it to districts for the 100-meter backstroke and the 200-meter individual medley, because I'm really close on both of them.

Q: Why do you love swimming?

A: I love being in the water, and I feel there's a really great team atmosphere. I have some really close friends on the team, and it's easy to make more while you're in the pool.

BOYS' WRESTLING

Last season: The Golden Eagles sent five wrestlers to the Mat Classic state tournament in Tacoma (two of whom are returning this year), with Jacob Gandy placing 5th in state in the 145-pound division. The team placed 18th overall.

Q: What are you most looking forward to this year?

A: The dual meets. I'm also excited to compete in our home gym.

Q: What is your goal for this year?

A: To win state.

Q: Why do you love wrestling?

A: The life lessons it's taught me. It sounds corny, but wrestling is probably the hardest thing I'll ever do, so it's taught me how to overcome big difficulties. I've been doing this since I was little, and it's what I love.

GIRLS' WRESTLING

Last season: The Golden Eagles sent two wrestlers to the Mat Classic state tournament (one of whom, Eliana Guillory, is returning this year) and Guillory competed in a national tournament in Fargo, ND.

Junior Eliana Guillory

Q: What was it like going to the national meet?

A: It was really good. The experience itself was the best reward I could've asked for.

Q: What is your goal for this year?

A: My goal is to go back to state this year and try to place. Last year, I went two-and-out, but it was an awesome experience.

Q: Why do you love wrestling?

A: It's the people that you meet. Everyone has the same goal, and I've met some really awesome people here. Some of them end up turning into best friends, and then into mentors.
