PLEASE DISTRIBUTE AND SHARE INFORMATION AND TAKE CARE OF YOUR NEIGHBORS IN POTENTIALLY IMPACTED AREAS

 

Out of an abundance of caution, the City of Ferndale is warning the public of potential major flooding that may impact the areas described below.  Due to the unpredictable nature of floods, the city strongly recommends that the public begins evacuation NOW from the impacted areas described below.

 

Residents are advised to be vigilant of rising flood waters beginning Thursday, December 11^th and continuing into Saturday, December 13^th   Additional flooding events are possible next week.

 

Potential areas most affected by projected flooding includes:

 

(1) That area south of Main Street between 4^th Avenue and the Nooksack River.

(2) That area including the Whatcom Transit Authority Ferndale Station Facility, the Ferndale Food Bank, and the Pilot/McDonalds retail complex.

(3) 1580 Main Street, 1625 Main Street, and vicinity.

(4) That area south of Washington Street and east of 2^nd Avenue, north and east of the BNSF railway.

 

Please note, if you decide to shelter in place, please prepare to shelter for at least 24 hours and know that emergency services may be delayed or unable to reach impacted areas. 

The Nooksack River has not yet reached its crest, and the potential exists for the river to overtop the existing levee, and for tributaries to the Nooksack River overtopping their banks and stranding residents and motorists .  Residents and businesses are encouraged to secure and then evacuate their properties; the City will inform the public when it is safe to return.  All residents outside of the voluntary evacuation area are requested to avoid any unnecessary trips and to stay off the roadways, in order for emergency and first responders to effectively respond to the emergency.

Temporary shelter will be made available if needed for households impacted by potential flooding. A safe space to sleep, hot food, and referrals to community resources will be provided at both locations.

AVISO DE EVACUACIÓN VOLUNTARIA: ¡ACTÚE YA! 

POR FAVOR, DISTRIBUYA Y COMPARTA INFORMACIÓN Y CUIDE A SUS VECINOS EN LAS ZONAS POSIBLEMENTE AFECTADAS

Como medida de precaución, la ciudad de Ferndale advierte al público sobre posibles inundaciones graves que podrían afectar las zonas descritas a continuación. Debido a la naturaleza impredecible de las inundaciones, la ciudad recomienda encarecidamente que la población comience a evacuar AHORA de las zonas afectadas que se describen a continuación.

Se recomienda a los residentes que estén atentos a la crecida de las aguas a partir del jueves 11 de diciembre y hasta el sábado 13 de diciembre. Es posible que se produzcan más inundaciones la próxima semana.

Las zonas más afectadas por las inundaciones proyectadas incluyen:

 

(1) La zona al sur de Main Street, entre la 4.ª Avenida y el río Nooksack.

Tenga en cuenta que, si decide refugiarse en el lugar, prepárese para refugiarse durante al menos 24 horas y tenga en cuenta que los servicios de emergencia podrían sufrir retrasos o no poder llegar a las zonas afectadas.

El río Nooksack aún no ha alcanzado su nivel máximo y existe la posibilidad de que sobrepase el dique existente, y que sus afluentes se desborden, dejando varados a residentes y conductores. Se recomienda a los residentes y negocios que aseguren sus propiedades y luego evacuen; la Ciudad informará al público cuando sea seguro regresar. Se solicita a todos los residentes fuera del área de evacuación voluntaria que eviten viajes innecesarios y se mantengan fuera de las carreteras para que los servicios de emergencia y de primera respuesta puedan responder eficazmente a la emergencia.

Se pondrá a disposición refugios temporales, si es necesario, para las familias afectadas por posibles inundaciones. En ambas ubicaciones se proporcionará un espacio seguro para dormir, comida caliente y referencias a recursos comunitarios.
