Jump Start and Family Connections Begins This Week

It's another exciting week in Ferndale Schools. Two programs that have been in the planning stages for months, were launched—Spring Jump Start and Ferndale Family Connections.

This morning, parents Derek Crifasi (pictured right with daughters Emily and Sophia) and Brooke Smith (pictured below with son Cullen) scurried their children through the pouring rain into their dry and warm Jump Start classrooms to begin their day with a nutritious breakfast to get them ready for learning. Jump Start has 34 students enrolled. Small classes are taught by a qualified kindergarten teacher and an assistant. Teachers are Kellee Schroeder and Jessie Reardon. Paraeducators are Tea Filippini and Amanda Byers. Jump Start is a kindergarten readiness program that runs five days per week, full Parent Brooke Smith and son Cullen who is in the Jump Start Programschool days through the end of this school year.

Ferndale Family Connections has 16 students enrolled. This program provides supplemental services in support of home learning. Classes are held Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays of each week. When we visited the program this morning, students were immersed in Spanish language in one class and learning S.T.E.M. (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) in the other class.

Teacher Shelly Shockley and students in the S.T.E.M classTeachers Shelly Shockley and Blayne Lambert are serving students in this program. Ms. Shockley returns to Ferndale where she previously taught elementary students at Skyline and Eagleridge elementary schools. "I am very excited to return to Ferndale Schools as a teacher in the new Family Connections Program," said Shockley. "I look forward to meeting my new students and their families." Ms. Lambert is a new addition to the district. "I am an enthusiastic and passionate teacher who loves getting to know each of my students individually and finding ways to explore their unique interests," said Lambert. "I know that working together, we can ensure our students reach their highest potential."

Special thanks to our food service staff Tracy Strissel and Tammy Bassir for providing nutritious meals for our students.

Both programs are located in classrooms at the district's North Bellingham campus.
