It's #SchoolBoardMonth! During the month of January, we want to especially recognize and thank our seven school board members (pictured above l to r): Dr. Kevin Erickson, Candice Wilson, Andrew McLaurin, Lee Anne Riddle, Hugh Foulke, Mason Waller and Ellie Baader.

All seven board members exemplify "Ferndale Pride!" They have won the Washington State School Directors Association's Board (WSSDA) of Distinction Award five times, they are past recipients of the WSSDA Board of the Year Award and the Washington School Boards' Educational Foundation Celebrating Diversity Award.

Dr. Erickson, born and raised in Ferndale, and current president of the school board, spends time with legislators advocating for schools. Each year, he attends meetings in Olympia where board members from across the state present their priorities for schools and students to the legislature. Also, he actively mentors Ferndale students who are interested in veterinary science.

The newest member of the board and Ferndale High graduate, Ms. Wilson has a passion for advocating for Native American students. She is a proud member of the Lummi Nation who seeks to ensure all students have opportunities to be successful. She’s the recipient of the Washington State Native American Coalition Against Domestic Violence & Sexual Assault Envision Spirit Award and Lummi Victims of Crime Honoring Our Champions Award. She serves on the Washington State Indian Education Association board.

Mr. Foulke joined the board in 2012. An Army veteran and retired Ferndale teacher, he is committed to making sure students have facilities that support their learning. He has served on past bond and levy committees, and currently represents the board on the Bond Task Force. He is a member of Ferndale Kiwanis, a service organization that recognizes and awards scholarships to students in Ferndale.

Mr. McLaurin has served on the board eight years. In 2003, he moved his family from North Carolina to Ferndale. The last of his five children graduated in 2017 from Ferndale Schools. He is passionate about educational opportunities for highly capable students and the district's award-winning music program. He has also served on levy committees.

The longest standing member of the board, Ms. Riddle, has served over 13 years. Her three children graduated from Ferndale Schools. She has a special interest in programs for students with disabilities. Also, she advocates for providing nutritious school meals to students. She was instrumental in bringing the Food $ense program to the district. She represents Area 1 on the WSSDA Board of Directors.

Student representative on the school board, Ms. Waller, attends Windward High School where she is active in Mock Trial, ASB, and encouraging and cultivating student involvement and voice. Also, she attends Whatcom Community College as a Running Start student.

The second student representative on the school board, Ms. Baader, attends Ferndale High School where she is active in leadership. She is part of the Link Crew. She enjoys working with others to solve a problem.

Thank you to our board for the countless volunteer hours they give to Ferndale Schools. They truly are "Building the Future of Public Education."
